Belleville Rallies for Local Music Scene

Local student seeks support to save his music scene.

In 2008, Belleville, IL, saw the closing of their best venue, Illegal Tone Recordings. It had been a haven for kids participating in and supporting the local music scene. ITR has since re-opened but under different rules and regulations and isn’t the refuge that it once was. Glenn Cole, SIUE student and lifelong member of the Belleville scene, is determined to make things right again with a pair of events — a support rally and a show — starting tonight at Fun Spot Skating Center.

The first event, the Local Musician Support Rally, starts tonight at 5pm. There will be speakers and press from the Belleville News Democrat. The intent of this get-together is to raise awareness about Cole’s cause and to get participants excited about next week’s show.

The second event, the show itself, will be held in the same place, Fun Spot. Starting at 5.30pm on April 14, the show features the following acts:

The Great Outdoors
Parlor Knights
Doorway
Go DJ, Go!

Tickets to the show are $8 at the door or available for purchase through participating musicians.

Cole had this to say about his endeavor, “We need to make the show huge, if only to set an example for other surrounding businesses that could potentially be venues. We can bring a crowd, we can make a show. We intend to show area businesses that it’s worth complying to ordinances to give us a place to come out and express ourselves. Fun Spot is leading by example to offer everyone that place. If we can successfully bring the scene back, we will no longer be in need of venues that let all of our friends in, no matter what age.”
