Girls and boys, your prayers for yet another emo-goth-punk band of black-haired, pierced-lipped lads to feverishly adore and befriend on MySpace have been answered.
Following is a snippet of a conversation I had with my friend Jason Potter, founding member, drummer and vocalist for St. Louis-based, garage-punk band Left Arm.
RR: Potter, can we listen to this on the way to the Tap Room?
JP: What, is it, something you have to review?
RR: Yeah, I want you to listen to the drums on this one song and tell me why I don't like it.
JP: [laughs] Okay.
[CD begins]
RR: It's got a "FallOutBoy/TakingBackSunday/StoryOfTheYear/LinkinPark/NewFound Glory/MyChemicalRomance" thing going. (Song begins and I make up lyrics.) "This is how I'm feeling! I have so many feelings! Real feelings, and I'll sing about them earnestly…"
JP: There's a huge market for this, you know. Sounds like AFI.
RR: Yeah, yeah, that's it!
JP: What's the label?
RR: Victory Records.
JP: Well, that's all you've gotta say.
So there you have it. Girls and boys, your prayers for yet another emo-goth-punk band of black-haired, pierced-lipped lads to feverishly adore and befriend on MySpace have been answered. Cleveland-based sextet Driver Side Impact has released its debut full-length CD, The Very Air We Breathe.
Their press release gushes about their "aggressive guitar-based rock with tuneful melodies and danceable rhythms (that forge) a sonic assault that is memorable and unique." Ugh. I find it neither. But I have to agree with my friend Potter. There's a huge market for this stuff, and Driver Side Impact will satiate emo kids' appetite for more of the same.
As for my copy of their CD that I seriously had to force myself to listen to all the way through? It's going to my 11-year-old daughter. I hope she doesn't ask me what the lyrics from the song "The Heist" mean. "Your soul can be another entrance for me…" Eek. I shudder to think. C | Rebecca Reardon
