On an evening back in 2000, Bright Eyes, the Faint, and the Rapture played Kansas City’s El Torreon. Mixed in with the kids who had come to catch Conor Oberst were a select few individuals there strictly for the opener, a band called the Minibosses. It is quite possible that it was the first concert they had ever gone to. The Bosses did not perform many original numbers, but they were not your normal cover band. Instead of covering rock standards, they played tunes from classic Nintendo video games. And thus a wonderfully new gimmick genre was born. While the Bosses were not the first band to explore this rather strange territory, they were the first to get some national attention via mentions in a few video game rags. Six years later the Minibosses are still rolling on. However, the genre has gotten a little more crowded courtesy of the NESkimos and most prominent, the Advantage.
If your eyes are a rolling right now then you really don’t need to continue on. This is fully understandable. To love this shit you just had to be there when your friend beat Legend of Zelda for the first time. Otherwise, chances are you are not going get or enjoy this record at all.
Sporting Hella guitarist Spencer Seim on drums, the Advantage take a more restrained approach to their Nintendo, as opposed to the heavier style of the Minibosses and the NESkimos. With their second LP Elf Titled, the Advantage continues to stick mainly to the better-known Nintendo titles in Contra, Metroid, Wizards and Warriors, Mega Man 2, the Castlevania trilogy, and Double Dragon 2.
In the terms of quality, the musicianship is outstanding and the tracks are what they are. Those raised with that little rectangular controller in their hands will surely hear these tunes and recall the fond memories of wasting five hours of a pleasant summer day before your mom kicked your lazy ass out the screen door.
