Desert island discs? Not for me. I would insist on bringing the bands. Think of it as Survivor without all the silly contests or bonfire confessions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sure, this has been a fairly good year for music, but if I am going to be banished, Napolean-like, to my own private desert island then I want some accompaniment that will entertain as well as provide some chance for survival. Of course the bands would be at the peak of their careers, so don't give me no pudgy/opera singer Elvis or late-in-life, spent Hank Williams (God, he was only 29). And since I am in full fantasy mode, this will be a Gilligan's Island type place where the booze will flow, pizzas will fall off trees and the monkies will crank the hammocks so they sway.

1. The Fall - I think a little sun might be helpful to M.E. Smith
2. Pulp  - no matter what kind of democratic society (no dictator am I) we have on the island Jarvis Cocker will seek to undermine it with sharp witty barbs.
3. The Clash - what better band for an island than a band that built their sound on reggae and serious political discontent (note to self: keep them away from Cocker)
4. Elvis Costello - I would prefer angry version Elvis even though there would be some fights in the island bar.
5. Eleni Mandell - amazing songwriter and will do the torchlight shows. Also she can make clothes for the island inhabitants.
6. Rev. Al Green - we all need a little faith
7. Hank Williams Sr. - Just sing the hits and we can keep listening for days.
8. Joy Division - I take it we also get New Order with this deal, but I will "settle" for Joy Division.
9. PJ Harvey -  she is the complete package - great songwriter, great voice, and...well, I would imagine she would look good in a sarong.
10. Radiohead - Do I really need to justify this? Also, you get the art bonus.
