From the time this album begins, it’s clear that they are similar, and yet very different than their peers in the genre.
Born in 2012 in London. Acrania is a politically charged deathcore/death metal band. From the time their debut LP, Totalitarian Distopia, begins, it’s clear the band is similar to, and yet very different from, its peers in the genre. The guitars are thick and full. It sounds like there are about 400 guitarists playing precisely the same chords or the same riffs at the same time. It’s big and heavy—heavier than the atomic weight of mercury.
This band is different, in my opinion, in its drum sound. To begin with, it sounds like the drummer is an octopus. Beyond just the octopus drumming, there’s also the loud bass thumps. Like Machine Head did on their album The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears, Acrania uses loud synth bass booms as an exclamation point. Normally, this would turn me off of a record, but the band used it so tastefully, so right, so that when it came up, it felt like the roof was caving in. The effect is immaculate and so metal.
My biggest complaint is just the lack of lead guitar work. In metal, the songs need some face melting; here, aside from a very long solo in the middle of the record, it was primarily just little melody tails at the ends of the riffs. You Could Do Worse | Nik Cameron
