The Demo, St. Louis

On an evening that started off a little chilly, I found myself regretting the black hoodie I brought with me, as I was sweating inside the tiny club. As with most Friday nights, the Grove was vibrant with people of all stripes walking up and down the block. The Demo, at least when I’m there, always creates a vivid opposite effect: It’s black, drab, and just awesome.

After Van Buren and the Damned Holy Rollers took their turns on the stage, Twingiant from Phoenix, Ariz., took over.

Having heard their latest release, Devil Down, I was familiar with what they do, but this was my first time seeing them live. Twingiant is a grooving, psychedelic metal band that sings about god only knows what. But, they’re not mere stoner rock band just mindlessly aping Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix. Their ability on their instruments is very apparent, as is their desire to perform.

Over the 45 minutes they graced the stage, between bellowing growls, harmony solos, tick-tock precision drumming, and out-and-out riffing, the band belted out tracks from their two LPs and debut EP. Few bands can recreate the music like Twingiant did, and I can’t wait for them to get back. | Nik Cameron
