The music is full of synergy and the vocals are as common as guitar solos on a KISS record.
There are people who do not care about the world of music anymore. They only care about the world of music we had 20 years ago, 30 years ago, and so on and so forth. How many times have you seen the bumper sticker that says, “I may be old but at least I got to see all the cool bands?”
Well, I’m no fan of that logic. I love new music.
However, this review is for the first group of people.
Crowned in Earth is a British rock band that started off as doom metal. Its current sound, as the band has largely reinvented itself, is a great cross between Ummagumma Pink Floyd and Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd.
The music is large. The sounds are lavish. Everything is avant garde, but it’s a bit more focused than the former record by The Floyd, and slightly less focused than the latter.
Listening to this record, it’s hard to see this group of musicians as a former metal band. There is no crunch to this sound at all. There is no anger. The music is full of synergy and the vocals are as common as guitar solos on a KISS record. That is to say, there’s not a whole lot of singing: The story is told through the music.
If you’d like something a bit left of center than what’s around these days, you should buy this record. | Nik Cameron
