Harper Blynn is a band from Brooklyn comprised of Pete Harper, J.Blynn, Sarab Singh, and Whynot Jansveld. Pete and J. previously played together under the band name Pete and J. With the addition of Sarab on drums and Whynot on bass, the band name changed to the surnames of the founding members. Their debut album, Loneliest Generation, was released earlier this year and the disc is filled with clever, upbeat rock. Their current single, the title track, is number one on the mtvmusic.com Rock chart. The band was last here in early June, and their show was energetic and entertaining. This show will no doubt be just as much fun as the band continues to carve out a name for themselves.

Once their set is over, Harper Blynn will not be leaving the stage. They’re going to be accompanying both Cary Brothers and Greg Laswell. I asked Whynot in June if they would be able to handle playing that long every night, and he laughed it off, saying that playing was the easy part. Easy or not, they’ll certainly be backing up some fantastic artists.

Cary Brothers is quite the performer, having toured extensively with the likes of Matt Nathanson and The Fray. He was also the driving force behind the Hotel Café tour, which started in the United States and eventually expanded to Europe and Japan, and featured artists such as Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles and Butch Walker. His second album, Under Control, debuted at #1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. Under Control, like the previous album Who You Are, has shown up on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, debuting at #10. While Who You Are is a great album, Under Control surpasses it musically, and it will be a treat to hear the songs live.

Greg Laswell was one of the performers on the Hotel Café tour, though that was just one of the tours in support of the four albums he has released in the last seven years. His most recent disc is Take a Bow, out this year in May on Vanguard Records. Laswell says of the album, “Perhaps the biggest difference with this album is that I’m not miserable.” This is not to say the album is all sunshine—there are certainly dark moments—but it’s a strong album that gives fans of his music more of what they love: richly layered songs with lyrics that run the gamut between brooding and mischievous. Overall, this promises to be an exceptional show, and a great way to spend a Friday evening. | Teresa Montgomery
