Love is patient, love is kind, and love is in the air, because it's Valentine's Day!
So, Valentine's Day. I'm not going to pretend that this isn't the most worrisome column of the year because it is. I mean, how does a column that celebrates love year-round make the nod at the day that exists solely to sell cards about love? Well, this year we're going to celebrate it with a little bit of the Bible, that bit we hear at every wedding ever (mine, too, lest I sound like I'm too cool for that sort of thing), with a pretty super twist.
Love is patient, or Pepper Potts would have never, ever have kept Tony Stark's life together since his true love for forty years has been booze.
Love is kind enough that Sue Storm and Reed Richards are together, even after that nasty incident with the rays and blatant scientific negligence.
It does not envy, and so Special and Moustafa get to work together as couriers because Olive is super-cool.
It does not boast, and so a million superhero girlfriends kept their silence because I know I would've been all “WE ARE IN A MEETING AND I AM TALKING SO YOU SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH BEFORE I HAVE MY BOYFRIEND FRY YOU WITH HIS EYEBALLS. God, some people have no workplace manners.” And then someone's gig would've been up.
It is not proud, and Yukari looked beautiful in George's dresses for years after Paradise Kiss broke up and George left her to go to America. Instead of burning down the building they were housed in, she wore his gifts because they were beautiful, fragile things that suited her, much like their entire relationship.
It does not dishonor others, and Mary Jane Watson understood that Gwen Stacy was very, very important to Peter.
It is not self-seeking, and so we have Clark Kent, who spent about a million years saying things like “Superman was just here a minute ago, Lois. You just missed him! Bummer. But he said to tell you that you look really pretty today.” Remember those days? They were so rad.
It is not easily angered, which is a good thing because there's a lot of not-powered people coupled up with people who have crazy scary powers.
It keeps no record of wrongs, so Betty Ross and Bruce Banner still seem to be friendly every now and again, despite the fact that they occasionally turn into giant Hulk-type things and she seems to be really, really susceptible to brainwashing.
Love does not delight in evil, so Batman will probably keep trying to convince Catwoman to put aside her wicked ways but rejoices with the truth and Alfred will always know what happened to movie!Batman and it will make him a happy, happy man.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres, and so do we. Happy Valentine's Day, nerdlings. | Erin Jameson
