Cults | Static (Columbia)

Cult 75I really had no idea what they were going for, and I found myself thinking about my gas bill more than listening to the song.

Cult 500

Here's what I thought of Cults' album, Static. Remember all scores are out of a possible 10 points.

“I Know” - Not really sure why they felt the need for an intro song without words, but I liked the '50s nostalgic feel of the guitar. I swear I thought they were going to break out with “My boyfriend's back and your gonna be in trouble.” But they didn't. Score: 5

“I Can Hardly Make You Mine” - I like the music — the big beats and the overall cheery aspect of the music. But the vocals gave me gas. Distorted vocals are fine, but these just pissed me off. Score: 4

“Always Forever” - I really like this song. The music is dreamy, the vocals are, what I call, ear candy. The whole track is hypnotic, and it made me re-evaluate the negative thoughts I was having today. Score: 8

“High Road” - This track has something. I cannot put my finger on it, but something held my attention. Maybe it was the vocals, the introduction of male back-up vocals, or, once again, maybe it was the dreamy music. But this track definitely has something. Score: 7

“Were Before” - I liked the second half of the song way more than the first half. The song really doesn’t go anywhere; it just kind of rambles on and on and on. Score: 4

“So Far” - The groove of this track really made me happy. The vocals were, well, blah. But the groove is for sure what sells it. Score: 5

“Keep Your Head Up” - The chorus is what goes to me in this song. The music is interesting and, in this case, I appreciated the distorted vocals. Not a bad song but not a fabulous one either. Score: 6

“TV Dream” - Um, excuse me? What the hell is this? A 1:03 song and I am not going to even act like I had any idea what she was singing about. Score: 0

“We've Got It” - Now this is a song I can appreciate — Great vocals, excellent music, and a good beat. I knew you could do it; do more of this! Score: 8

“Shine a Light” - I loved the guitar work on this track far more than I liked the vocals. Sorry to be a broken record, but they just annoy me. Light and dreamy — which seems to be the theme of this album — this track is one of the better ones on the album. Score: 7

“No Hope” - This track was a bit too disjointed for my taste. I really had no idea what they were going for, and I found myself thinking about my gas bill more than listening to the song. Score: 3

Average Track Score: 5.2. Would I recommend this album to my friends? Um, no. With so many other great albums out, this one is a pass. | Jim Ryan @draglover
