Not only does the title track make you want to dance, it also pulls you in with the simple yet catchy lyrics.
With the first listen, The Veronicas' sophomore album, Hook Me Up, may not sink in all the way. It's not until hours later when you find yourself repeating the lyrics over and over in your head that you realize the magnetism of the album.
The Veronicas consists of two 23-year-old twin sisters, Jessica and Lisa Origliasso, who hail from Brisbane, Australia. They claim that, with this second album, they delve more into the electro-pop-rock scene. The new music is something you'd hear and see people dancing to in a club, and probably even singing along to. It's catchy and hard to forget.
The first track, "Untouched," starts the album off well with a fast-paced, electro-techno beat. That song and the next track, "Hook Me Up," stand out from the others. Not only does the title track make you want to dance, it also pulls you in with the simple yet catchy lyrics. "Sometimes, I wanna get away some place/ But I don't wanna stay too long/ Sometimes, I want a brand new day/ Trying to fit in where I don't belong," they sing. The lyrical topics range from sexual innuendos and being in love to bitter breakups and loneliness.
The majority of the songs keep up the pace and have the same club feeling to them. The Veronicas close the album by slowing it down a bit on "In Another Life," still a good song that also stands out for its piano and reveals just what talented singers these twins are.
My only complaint against Hook Me Up is that it's nothing different than most girl-pop albums out there. The Veronicas sound is comparable to Jessica and Ashley Simpson with a touch of Fergie. But it's still worth a listen...or even a dance. A- | Alex Bates
