Guitars dominate, but in an improvised, Interstellar Overdrive sort of way (in fact, the spirit of early Pink Floyd lurks among the drone and creative percussion of "Clear Cut"), leaving the blazingly off-kilter rhythm section to do oddly interesting things.

 

 

Now here's a mighty slab of dark, electrified rock for lovers of edgy sounds. This four-track EP, featuring the genre-busting work of singer/guitarist Justin Sinkovich, fiery bassist Patrick Morris (formerly of Don Caballero) and drummer Adam Reach, sizzles with raw yet artful power from start to finish. On "Making Sense of Making Cents," the fluttering notes at the low end of the fretboard reveal Sinkovich to be a guitarist intriguingly preoccupied with wildness, or vaguely sinister soundscapes that hypnotize you into submission. His coolly detached voice (which drifts into spoken word, accompanied by female guest vocals on gripping opener "Lockaway") suits the material perfectly. There's a commanding presence to this music, and a high-wire aesthetic that signals the arrival of a bold, adventurous new rock band. A | Kevin Renick
