Lionsgate has set September 16 as the digital release date for Americana, the neo-Western that puts Sydney Sweeney front and center in a gritty tale of small-town tension. The film will hit streaming and purchase platforms like Prime Video and Fandango at Home, bringing Sweeney’s latest dramatic turn directly to audiences’ living rooms. Joining her in this Tony Tost-written and directed affair are Paul Walter Hauser (who’s gearing up for The Fantastic Four: First Steps) and Eric Dane (Countdown). The story kicks off when a Lakota Ghost shirt hits the black market, setting off a violent chain reaction among the marginalized residents of a South Dakota town.
Critical Reception Shows Mixed but Promising Results
Americana landed a 63% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes – not quite rotten, but still a ways off from that coveted “Certified Fresh” badge that’s eluded Sweeney since 2023’s Reality. Audiences proved more generous, though, awarding the film a solid 77% rating on the Popcornmeter. That puts it third in Sweeney’s filmography, trailing only Anyone But You and Big Time Adolescence. Given its indie roots and limited theatrical run, the film’s sub-$1 million worldwide box office take was pretty much expected.

Paul Feig, who gave us Another Simple Favor, steps behind the camera for this adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel. The plot centers on a woman attempting to rebuild her life while working for a wealthy couple – sounds like perfect thriller territory. The Housemaid gets an exclusive theatrical release on December 19, giving audiences another chance to see Sweeney flex her dramatic muscles on the big screen.
