With every release the band’s sound becomes more mature, and AM continues to support that growth.
When it came time to sit down and write album number five, it seems Arctic Monkeys got right to thinking of what they could do to grow from the past. With improved songwriting and vocal diversity, AM proves the band is at the top of their game.
The album’s strengths come from how well developed it is. It’s incredibly clean and structured. Not only that, it’s simple, focused, and quite memorable. Hooks grab me like a naive fish in the sea, keeping me humming along well after the song is over. “Fireside” is a great example of this simplicity and solid structure.
Even the focus of the songs are improved. AM does a great job of establishing an overarching theme of relationships and lust, especially in “Do I Wanna Know?” and “R U Mine?” This release also seems a bit more chilled out than past releases. I really enjoy the softer vibe it gives off, though some may interpret it as an anchor to the album’s flow.
Arctic Monkeys have developed their sound to its highest potential with this album, taking influences from many of their past song styles. With every release the band’s sound becomes more mature, and AM continues to support that growth. It’s just a fantastic record, front to back. A | Alex Wilking
